Based on the building block forms of Cerda’s grid in the Eixample district of Barcelona, BLOQ is an experiment in combining architectural forms with alphabetical forms.
By restricting the form of components to those found within the city grid the system is forced into certain choices. By adding depth and perspective to the shapes, the aim is to give a sense of scale and view from above. Experimenting further with scale, the block becomes a pixel — zooming in and out of the street patterns below.
The typeface was started as a response to the brief for the MCRBCN exhibition in September 2025. An initial sketch for application shown here uses it in the context of a poster for an architectural event about Cerda's work.
